Aerials

My paintings explore the narrative of the landscape from an aerial perspective. The visual elements of a traditional landscape and an abstract composition come together in a unique way when viewed from the perpendicular viewpoint. My approach is grounded in the use of landscape photos from satellite technologies. This technology is specific to this time in history and gives us a broader and more enlightened view of our planet.

My body of work is focused on the relationship between the environment and urban development. Fields are divided into geometric shapes by type of crop and then outlined by the tracks of machinery. An urban environment spreads within natural boundaries and the infrastructure unfolds in rhythmic patterns. My paintings are an analysis of these areas as seen through the lens of a satellite. The image is broken down into geometric elements before adding the colors and textures inspired from the landscape.

I have always been interested in combining new technology into my paintings. My smart phone became a source of inspiration as I noticed the way my surroundings looked in the navigation application. That view allows me the ability to combine the color field work that has dominated my paintings for many years with abstracted landscape elements. We are the first generation of artists that are capable of seeing our world in this way. My paintings are my own interpretation of this new perspective.
